Berry Student Elected Leader of Georgia Association of College Republicans

Berry College senior Elliot Echols was recently elected chairman of the Georgia Association of College Republicans – bringing him one step closer to his political aspirations.

Echols, who is from Rome, Ga., said he would like to work at the state Capitol one day, so being elected at a ceremony in the Senate chambers was definitely on his to-do list.

“This opportunity will help me become a better leader, preparing me for a career in the armed services and politics. It’s getting me ready for my future,” said Echols, an economics major who also works as a  student assistant in the President’s Office. The former head of the Berry College Republicans also helped bring Georgia National Guard Adjutant General William T. Nesbitt to speak on Veterans Day at  the college.

In line with Berry’s hands-on tradition, Echols intends to visit every chapter in the state during his tenure, including the largest chapter in the nation at the University of Georgia.

Founded in 1996, the group’s  goal is to educate college students about the conservative movement and elect Republican leaders as a state federation affiliate of the College Republican National Committee. Echols’ role on the executive board will include raising money for Republican candidates and increasing membership.

Georgia Democrat Leader Ridicules Voters As “Cave People”

Take notes, folks.

Below is an example of how not to win elections:

. . .about 30 percent of [state Rep. Allen]Peake’s constituents are “almost cave people, conservative — people who are against almost everything,” [Georgia Senate Democrat Leader Robert]Brown said. He plans to paint that group as the political “bad guys,” overcoming them with large majorities elsewhere, he said.

Gaines, Jim (2011-4-24). Leaders gather to push consolidation. Macon Telegraph. Retrieved on 2011-4-28.

Insulting another state legislator’s constituents as “almost cave people” is a sure fire way to alienate those voters; and if the Senator from Macon has forgotten, allow me to remind him that those conservative voters he’s ridiculing represent a clear majority in this state.

GA Dem Leader Attends Racial Unity Event After Comparing Opponents To KKK

Last month, Georgia Senate Democratic Leader Robert Brown compared his political opponents to the Ku Klux Klan. This month, Senator Brown appeared at a forum to discuss ways that racial unity could be achieved.

To state Sen. Robert Brown, D-Macon, racial progress will require elected officials to openly acknowledge the existence of institutional racism, and community organization to demand changed public policies.

“We are not being honest with one another,” he told a crowd Thursday night.

[Brown and Bibb County Commissioner Joe Allen]addressed a community forum on race and politics, held at Macon City Hall, which drew about 60 people, including a number of city officials and community leaders. It was hosted by Unity-N-Community and sponsored by NewTown Macon, Clear Channel Macon and Cricket Communications.

Gaines, Jim (2011-1-21). Sen. Brown at race forum: ‘We’re not being honest with one another’. Macon Telegraph. Retrieved on 2011-1-21.

If we’re going to be honest with each other and tell the truth, then we should acknowledge that equating your political opponents with a white supremicist organization doesn’t exactly promote racial unity.

Racial progress will only be achieved when black folks stop implying that anyone who disagrees with them politically is racist; and white folks become a little more sensitive to issues of importance to the black community.
