Redmond To Host Medication Drop-Off Event

Redmond Regional Medical Center will be hosting the Clean Rivers for Rome medication drop-off event April 30, 2011. This prescription drug take-back event will allow for the public to properly dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications and keep them out of the wrong hands and our drinking water.

Unintentional poisoning from prescription medications is on the rise and every year, over 2 million poison exposures are reported in the U.S. In 2009, over 51% of reported poisonings in Georgia involved children ages 5 and under.

The Clean Rivers for Rome program offers the public a free and convenient option for disposing of prescription, over-the-counter medications (in pill and liquid form), needles and diabetes materials to protect their families and the environment. Items such as thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment and hydrogen peroxide will not be accepted.

“Our first event in May of 2010 had an enormous response and we realized what a need this program met,” says Rick Nance, Pharmacy Director at Redmond. “We collected over 400 pounds of medication at our first event and 300 pounds at our second event in the fall. That confirmed the need for this type of program in Rome and Floyd County and Redmond is proud to be able to offer this important event to protect our community.”

These items can only be accepted at the following location during the times listed below:
